Please bring an interesting photo of yourself or someone you know. A digital copy will be best but we can take a picture of your picture if you don't have a digital copy. We are going to be writing stories about these photos on Monday.
Complete things that have not been done. If no one else is working on Prezi please complete yours.
Begin working on the New Media Literacies by reading through this and then completing the task.
I will be recording individual messages created by you that you will use in your Blabberize assignment later on.
A. New Media Literacies
Performance: the ability to adopt alternative identities for the purpose of improvisation and discovery. Being able to move fluidly and effectively between roles can help you when you're exploring online communities, when you're trying to decide what actions are ethical, and when you're shuffling between home, work and school.
Educators have for too long treated role play as a means to an end—a fun way to introduce other kinds of content—yet we argue that role-play skills may be valuable in their own right and are increasingly central to the way adult institutions function. Performance brings with it capacities to understand problems from multiple viewpoints, to assimilate information, to exert mastery over core cultural materials, and to improvise in response to a changing environment. As with play and simulation, performance places a new stress on learning processes—on how we learn more than what we learn. These learning processes are likely to sustain growth and learning well beyond the school years.
All sorts of video and computer games allow students to role play and problem solve.
Task
1. Try one of the role-playing games by clicking on this link. Role Playing Games. See if you can do better than I did. I killed the patient because I couldn't put in the sutures while fixing a broken arm. Be careful you could end up playing here all day!!
2. Write about the games you played in your blog. Tell us how you might use such a game in your class-room.
B. Blabberize
1. Go to Blabberize and open an account. Follow the instructions to create your Blabberize message. You can use the picture that I took yesterday to create your Blabberize message.
2. Upload the audio recording to your Blabberize.
3. Once you have completed your Blabberize click on share it. A window will pop up with a box full of HTML code. Copy this code and paste it in a new post on your blog.
Here is where it gets tricky- You are going to have to alter the code in order to embed it in your blog-
The areas in purple have been deleted as you can see below. An open bracket has been added as well as the word gigya at the end a close bracket has been added.
Copy the altered code and paste it below the code you have already pasted in the new post area. You will delete this later but put it there for now so you have an example to follow.
You need to delete everything up to the part where you see the src= as shown in green above. Add an open bracket and the gigya. Now look through the code and see if you can find the word controls=0 and delete everything after that. Put in a close bracket. Make sure you are on the html tab- publish and you should be good to go. You may not see the controls=0 so you may have to guess at where to end it . Just try deleting a few things and see how it goes.
C. Photobucket
You will need to insert images from the internet. The best way to do this is to set up a photosharing account on the web. There are many different sites but we are going to use Photobucket.
Go to www.photobucket.com and set up and account. Upload your images to this account.
D. Google Maps For this assignment you will need a google account.
I've shared a map with you called Communicate, Collaborate and Creating in Dominica
Click on the edit button- this will allow you to place a marker where your home is. You should see a blue marker on the top left side of the map. Click and drag it over to where you live. A text box should open. Fill it in- label it with your name and tell us a little about your home. Insert your picture by clicking on the insert image on the upper right corner of the text box. Get the code from Photobucket and paste it in the text box. Make sure you save your work.
